Purple Martin Houses

Purple Martin Houses

Purple Martin Range MapThe Purple Martin likes a Purple Martin Bird House that lets Purple Martins live as a colony, yet remain independent. Our attractive purple martin housing is designed to meet their needs.

ATTRACTING PURPLE MARTINS

After ensuring that your area is frequented by Purple Martins take the following into account.

Location of your Purple Martin Bird House is very important. The Purple Martin housing should be no closer than 30 feet to your house, but no greater than 120 ft. Additionally, it should be located in open space, no closer than 40 feet from trees. Ideally, if you live near a body of water, it could be placed at the end of a dock.

Consider painting your Martin House, with a oil based primer for the first coat and two additional coats of oil based or latex paint. The lighter color will keep the house cooler, which is desirable for the Martins. Additionally, painting the interior will allow for easier cleaning and spotting parasite.

You should keep your housing up through at least the end of August. It is important to know that even if you don't get Martins the first year, the presence of you house be observed and used for the following year.

MAINTENANCE OF PURPLE MARTIN HOUSES

Here are some suggestions for maintaining your Purple Martin Housing:

  • Weekly checks should be made to ensure that you are not losing any birds/eggs to predators and that parasites have not taken up residence. During extreme hot conditions the presence of parasites can increase. If that happens, it may be necessary to re-locate nestlings to a temporary container. Throw out the parasite infested nest, then replace with clean, dry wood shavings, or draw straw and form in to the shape of a nest and carefully place the nestlings back.
  • At the end of the year, after your Purple Martins have left, take the Martin Housing down until it is needed for the next year.

PREDATORS

Keeping the Martin housing free from predators is important, otherwise the presence of predators will deter the Martins from using your housing. You will want to periodically check in on the housing you have established to see who's there. In the case of non-native Starlings or Sparrows, you may want to trap and/or shoot them. In the case of native birds you may want to close up your Martin housing and establish other nearby housing for the non-Martin birds.

Pole Guards should be used to keep out squirrels, raccoons, snakes, and other undesirables.
